I have always heard that a celebrity or in this case a show needs to stay in the limelight. Did the networks start doing this because the cable networks run their shows this way? Has a show ever improved it's ratings from being shown this way? I stopped watching ER when they started showing another show in its time slot.
With my work schedule I always end up missing a show or two on first run and am able to catch up with re-runs. Do they ever show re-runs with a split season or do they usually put on another show in its place?
But inevitably, the show is a serialized drama. Those shows really have nowhere to go but down, as now one jumps on the ship midway through and people leave because you can't really miss an episode. Same thing happened to Lost, Heroes, 24, etc.
CBS is probably better off airing repeats of CSI or NCIS all night. But at least the fans were able to get 7 episodes out of CBS, though it appears that will definitely be it.
If you don't watch the show on your TV, at 10 pm Eastern, the suits ain't gonna renew it again. So now that everyone knows Jericho is back, WATCH IT!!!!!!!
By force, if necessary. ;)
FYI, there are 12,000 people meter families in these cities. Good hunting.
Does anyone know if cable companies can measure what channels their viewers are watching, maybe through DVR/Cable boxes relaying information back to them?
Sure there are other shows with low ratings...but they do so successfully in DVR ratings, itunes, online downloading...that networks know these shows are popular...not so much with Jericho.
Face it, CBS only brought the show back for some "buzz"...which CBS with its procedural shows never gets...but I see that buzz didn't work .
I for one have introduced the show to two new households this season... though like many point out, those people, like me, do not count as Nielson is not our friend... but if networks can give two and three years to crap like Friday Night Lights or Arrested Development, then surely Jericho is worth at least one more FULL SEASON before being given up on...
Or else indeed... sell the rights to SCI-FI for a regular series... or a few "network movies"...
CBS is also looking at online activity. So while you're waiting for your Season One DVD, you can watch full Jericho episodes online at: http://www.cbs.com/primetime/jericho/video/
Moreover, if it's true for Jericho, it's also true for shows like House and Lost -- if Nielsen is flawed with Jericho, it's flawed with those shows too -- but those shows do MUCH better than Jericho.
Online and DVR viewing will not save Jericho (at least not on a broadcast network during primetime), only more live viewers will save it.
New Media has to be addressed in the counting because it is too convienient for people to watch tv when they want and where they want. None of the networks want to address the new media counting, but they are going to have to, or be left behind. All you have to look at is 3 words: The Writer's Strike. What do you think they were all fighting for. They know where new-media is heading and where people are really tuning in for their favorite shows.
Where new media is HEADING and where new media IS RIGHT NOW are two very different things. I do agree it will get there, but as far as this sort of thing goes, I'd guess it won't matter for at least another 5 years.
I felt the same way you did when those numbers came out. However, it's very difficult to say where CBS is on Jericho right now. They've implemented several promotional decisions, including a free release on iTunes and promos during Survivor, and the message from the producers seemed encouraged. They're even considering gaming rights.
Look for the episode 2 and 3 to tell the full story. I imagine that is what CBS is doing. Especially given that ratings are down across the board.
Best,
Rich
I'm willing to bet a beer that the next 2 installments won't fare any/much better than last week's premiere. I wish it were not so, but sometimes one data point is enough. Sadly for me, this is one of those times.
It sounded very sketchy to me and like people wouldn't want to give up personal info to get said password.
Certainly, besides some mainstream advertising, CBS didn't do much.
Considering the content in season two, you would think that they would have reached out to some political blogs.
Also, where was Skeet's tour of the morning talk shows? Where was the promo for the show? Why didn't they put some people out there to talk about it?
It looks to be such a good run of shows, more people should see them.
Look at the timeslot Jericho got. Thats where CBS screwed up. But I saw alot of advertizments… Oh, and don’t hanbd it over to the sci-fi channel, i don’t get that. But I mean, hell there are ALOT more people watching Jericho out there than just the ones who sent nuts. I didn’t send nuts (i was, but i had no cash), and what isn’t taken into account here is the other channels. CTV and Space are also airing Jericho, and Citytv was last season, i mean, the numbers on those channels aren’t taken into account, and Space and CTV have given Jericho a better timeslot. I woudln’t be shocked if CTV got more viewers than CBS, mainly because CBS screwed up the timeslot majorly. Also, Jericho was the number 3 show for it’s timeslot of tuesday, and better in the important 18-49 range of viewers, ya I love Jericho, I got the first season when it came out, yes I am 14 and still in school, but I am also able to see what is going on here. I hope Jericho isn’t tossed, although numbers aren’t what they could be, and below any number of the first season, it still has 5 episodes to prove it self, before CBS shows the season finale created, or the series finale that was created… thats right 2 were created… I just hope its the season… and i guess maybe they could leak the series on the net just so we can see LOL. I think viewers will pick up more after 3 episodes, cause the 3 that were leaked on the internet, people have seen them. Things will pick up…
Anyway, bye all
RESPOND TO ME
A show like Jericho belongs on cable (HBO, SHOW, etc.). I'd rather have it on Sci-Fi than no where, but if for some reason new episodes after these 7 are made by Sci-Fi, then I fear the budget cuts will really start to show.
I am not a watcher (it's not in my wheelhouse), but I am tempted to start (if my DVR can fit it in). I am hoping for all of you Jer fans that it gets renewed. You folks have earned it.
I've just never really seen it happen (or has it happened and I just didn't notice?)
Oh Jericho, couldn't you have sucked this season so I didn't care if you were cancelled.
I'm only an idiot for predicting from the very first airing of season 2 that Jericho would be cancelled. :)
